CDC PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING

Public Health Nurses (PHN) provide in-home or virtual health care services, available to all prenatal and postpartum individuals and infants. All services are provided at no cost.

Our nurses provide education, nursing assessment, and feeding support during pregnancy and after birth. Our nurses are Certified Lactation Counselors. A PHN can address concerns you have with your pregnancy or birth, answer your health questions about you or your baby, and connect you with resources and services to support the health of your infant and family. MAINE FAMILIES

Maine Families is offered to all families who are expecting or have a new baby at home. Maine Families’ certified Family Visitors can provide information, encouragement, and support around topics that matter to you regarding health, nutrition, safety, development, and your family’s well-being. Best of all, they will come to you at your convenience and at no cost to you!

Family visits are a time to:

  • Focus on your pregnancy, newborn, or toddler.
  • Learn about your child’s development.
  • View educational videos and resource materials.
  • Ask a Parents as Teachers certified Family Visitor questions about parenting.

Your Visitor will meet with you in the comfort and privacy of your own home to:

  • Provide you with prenatal support and give you information about childbirth and fetal development.
  • Share information on breastfeeding/bodyfeeding and nutrition tips for you and your baby as they grow and develop.
  • Share information about what you may expect at different ages and stages of your baby’s development.
  • Share toys, books, and games to help you encourage your baby’s healthy growth.
  • Provide you with helpful tools and ideas for meeting the daily challenges of parenting.
  • Help you connect with other community services and resources for additional support.

211 is a free, confidential information and referral service that connects people of all ages across Maine to local services. 211 Maine is based in Maine and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our Specialists are trained and friendly; they know we all need help sometimes.

WIC

The WIC program provides nutritious foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding/chestfeeding support, and referrals to eligible pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum individuals, infants, and children up to age five. WIC provides nutrition care for thousands of Maine families, helping kids to grow up strong and healthy. These benefits are available based on income guidelines and nutrition research.

Applicants’ income must fall at or below 185 percent of the U.S. Poverty Income Guidelines. A person who receives MaineCare, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits are eligible.

EARLY INTERVENTION FOR ME

Early Intervention for ME helps children from birth to three achieve important developmental milestones. In a family-focused partnership, specialists show caregivers how to incorporate learning opportunities into a child’s everyday activities.
